How To Do It Right
Bill Mumy

I hauled a boat down to the river bank
I tried to float it but instead, it sank
I guess I didn't build it watertight
Nobody told me how to do it right

Other day when I was on the phone
I started yelling in an angry tone
I didn't mean to start a great big fight
Nobody told me how to do it right

    You better believe it's true
I do the best I can do
And I leave the rest up to you

I tried to love with my heart and soul
Your happiness was my sincerest goal
But I don't know who you'll be loving tonight
Nobody told me how to do it right

The fallen angel said to God the king
If mortal man's forgiven everything
Then won't you take me back into the light
Nobody told me how to do it right

    You better believe it's true
I do the best I can do
And I leave the rest up to you

I don't know why I bother
I don't know why I try
I asked the Son and the Father
I get no reply

Nobody's ever really made it quite clear
Just what we're all supposed to do around here
Who do we blame for all this human plight
Nobody told us how to do it right

    You better believe it's true
I do the best I can do
And I leave the rest up to you
